TOM MONTGOMERY ART
I have always been Inspired by the watercolour studies, particularly botanical illustration. Growing up, I enjoyed reading botanical watercolour books to identify native plants on my bush block. I have always been captivated by the way water colour’s unique properties can bring specimens to life. So it was a natural progression that I would pick up and experiment with this medium.
Capturing a perfect moment or behaviour can often take months or years, but when all the elements come together, it can be a very surreal and powerful experience. I believe strongly in gathering all of my own reference photos. The Kimberely is a perfect backdrop for exploring wildlife in a pristine environment. Local and remote trips have seen me capture a range of rare animals species and behaviours — each trip more thrilling than the last, keeping me motivated to paint and document my adventures.
Short films allow me to share the entire creative process from reference gathering to sketching and finally painting. This process reveals the story behind each piece and the journey from start to finish.
